Newborn photo session from A to Z
BEFORE YOUR PHOTO SESSION BEGINS…
Prior to your newborn session, we will spend some time discussing your colours choices and to ensure that the setups look exactly the way you want. We will also touch base on how to prepare your baby for his very first newborn photo session and on a wardrobe choice for mummy and daddy. So your photos look timeless and beautiful.
…Every baby is different and so will be the photographs and poses…
Every baby is different and so will be the photographs and poses. Some babies will settle immediately and sleep through the newborn photo session, some will take more time and will need a top-up feed half way: as a photographer (and mum!) I have learned to read their body language during the newborn photography session to determine how relaxed the baby is at any time during the baby photo session – and avoid using poses that could be unsafe or uncomfortable.
Of course, prior to the newborn photo session, we will have plenty of time to discuss about your favourite colours and poses to ensure your gallery looks exactly the way you want it – and typically the session will begin with a couple of poses that should help the baby relax and fall into a nice deep sleep.
RELAXING YOUR BABY…
First of all I will start with swaddling your baby in full body wrap. This usually relaxes baby, gives him the scene of security and warmth. I usually use two or three wraps and photograph your baby in a potato sack pose, side pose, nighty night pose and a few poses with the siblings. As well as posing in a bucket or a basket.
Colour scheme of your newborn photo session at this point is usually neutral at this point and you will be offered selection of matching hats and bonnets to go with the wrap.
From there, if the baby has fallen asleep, I will be able to start using different props while the baby is completely relaxed and all curled up. At this time of their life, in fact, babies will tend to go back to the natural position they had in the womb as soon as they fall asleep: these are beautiful moments that we should capture, as they are unique to this age. It really is a once in a lifetime opportunity!
NOW YOUR BABY IS RELAXED, HE IS READY
One of my all time favourite poses during a newborn photo session is an egg shell pose, when the baby is wrapped in a soft blanket and you can see his legs and hands crossed – There are so many beautiful variations of this pose – wrapped, non wrapped, in parent’s arms – it is just an endless possibility for timeless gorgeous photos of your baby.
TIME TO POSE WITH MUM & DAD
And once everyone is set I like to say,
“Ok, whenever you are ready”
and then let the magic happen.
These are wonderful photography moments because it portrays who you are as a couple and family and it is so unique and memorable. Generally, if needed, I will throw out some tips such as what to do with your hands or face while holding the baby, or where to place his/her head. A general rule of thumb for all my parents reading this, is to relax and enjoy time with your new baby. The love that you have for each other and for your baby is so powerful and beautiful – this is so beautiful to capture.
